Millwall and Derby County are both eyeing a deadline day deal involving Middlesbrough
Millwall and Derby County are both eyeing a move for Middlesbrough midfielder Dan Barlaser.
According to Teesside Live, the 28-year-old could be set for a deadline day move away from the Riverside.
Barlaser made the switch to Boro in the 2023 January transfer window, but he has struggled for consistent game time in the years since arriving from Rotherham United.
The midfielder has not featured for Middlesbrough this season under Rob Edwards, which could open the door for his exit before the 7pm deadline this evening.
Millwall and Derby are reportedly both in contention to sign Barlaser from Middlesbrough on deadline day.
It’s believed that Boro are open to a sale, with the player falling even further down the pecking order this season.
No agreements have yet been reached, with time quickly running out with the market set to shut later today.
It’s understood that Middlesbrough will be willing to go into the market to replace Barlaser, with the club lining up possible replacements.
The 28-year-old is in the final year of his current contract, so Boro will be keen to cash in on the player in order to avoid losing him for nothing in 2026.
Derby previously showed interest in signing Barlaser last January, but have since appointed John Eustace as manager, while Millwall secured the permanent signing of Josh Coburn from the Teesside outfit earlier this summer after an initial loan spell.
Middlesbrough have made a strong start to the new campaign under Edwards, with the team earning 12 points from a possible 12, putting them top of the table.
Boro are the only club in the entire second division to still have a 100 per cent winning record, with the league now on pause due to the September international break.
Barlaser hasn’t featured in any of Middlesbrough’s league games so far this season, and it’s clear he’s not in Edwards’ plans.
If they can earn a fee for his sale, then that could be a good use of deadline day for the club, especially given his contract situation.
It’s unlikely Derby or Millwall will need to pay much to convince Boro to cash in at this stage, as they are in a weak negotiating position.
But given they have a replacement seemingly in mind, it could be a move that works out well for all parties, if an agreement can be reached by this evening.
