The Rams have got off to a slow start this season, falling to defeat at the hands of Charlton Athletic on the opening day, before being held at home by newly-promoted Cardiff City on Saturday.

Couple that with a defeat to Lincoln City in the EFL Cup and Derby are left still in search of their first competitive victory of the new campaign.

However, boss John Eustace is still looking to strengthen his squad this summer before the transfer window slams shut on September 1st, and he could be set to add some serious brass to his wide areas.

on Sunday morning, Derby are eyeing up a transfer swoop for West Brom's Johnston and Ipswich's Mehmeti before the window closes.

There's been a lot to like about Derby's transfer business so far this summer, with the spine of a strong squad left intact by no key departures, and some serious quality added across the board.

The permanent return of Bobby Clark has been a standout piece of business, alongside the acquisitions of some hugely experienced Championship players such as Alex Mowatt and Charlie Taylor.

However, the start of the new season hasn't lived up to expectations, with the Rams sitting 17th after two games, with just a solitary point to their name.

While it's still early doors, Eustace will be looking to start putting together a string of positive results as quickly as possible, and according to Nixon, he could be dipping into the transfer market to make sure that happens.

The journalist has suggested in his latest report that Derby are in a queue to sign both West Brom winger Johnston and Ipswich winger Mehmeti, who could become available in the final week of the transfer window.

They aren't alone in their pursuit of the wide duo though, as Nixon reported that there could be a rush for both players should they become available at the end of this window.

Both Johnston and Mehmeti are certainly what you would call statement signings at Championship level, with both playing key roles in their respective teams last season.

Johnston played 34 times for Albion last term, netting twice but chipping in with a crucial eight assists which helped them beat the drop, whilst Mehmeti scored eight goals and assisted six times for Bristol City in the first half of the season before his move to Ipswich.

It seems both players would add some serious attacking quality to Eustace's side, as they have the creative stats to back up their quality, which is exactly what Derby are screaming out for.

It will be interesting to see if either player is on the move in the next week, but if the Rams do manage to land one of them, that can certainly be classed as a statement signing.
