FLW's Derby County fan pundit has given his verdict on a possible deal for Nathan Redmond
Derby County had quite an active summer transfer window as John Eustace looked to leave his mark on the first-team squad - but could they further add to it by dipping into the free agents market?
The Rams in particular added extra firepower to their attacking options, bringing in the likes of Patrick Agyemang, Carlton Morris, Andreas Weimann and Rhian Brewster, as well as agreeing a loan with Southampton for Ben Brereton Diaz.
However, the team does potentially still lack options out wide despite their summer business.
With clubs still able to register free agents, someone like Nathan Redmond could potentially be of interest to Derby in the coming weeks - although that could depend on whether there's any space in the club's 25-man squad.
When asked about the possibility of signing Redmond, FLW’s Derby fan pundit Shaun Woodward warned that adding another injury prone player might not be the best move.
He believes that Redmond has the potential to be a great addition, but is unsure of whether it would be worth bringing in another player with an unreliable availability record.
“I think most clubs in the Championship would be happy to bring in a player of Nathan Redmond’s quality,” Woodward told Football League World.
“He’s a proven player at this level, and higher, playing most of his career in the Premier League.
“He’s scored a lot of goals as well, he’s someone that can get you on the edge of your seat.
“But, he’s injury prone and he’s barely kicked a ball for a year, so is that someone we want to bring in when we’ve got a lot of players already like him that every time they go down you’re praying they get back up?
“Because we’ve had a lot of players that are just out for six weeks, eight weeks, half a season, we don’t want to add anymore to that list.
“So, for me, great if we brought him in because he’s someone that can really add width and excitement to our team.
“But, at 31, and a player that’s barely kicked a ball for a year, I’d probably be inclined to stay away from this one.
“Which I can’t believe I’m saying, because if you’d asked me a year ago, I’d have been absolutely all over it. But right now I think we’ve got enough in our squad that we don’t need to take any risks on injury prone players.”
If Redmond is willing to agree to a deal that protects Derby against any injuries, then this could be a move that’s worth pursuing.
He’s capable of playing in multiple roles in Eustace’s side, and has experience playing at the highest level.
There are limited options for remaining free agents, so if the club does feel the need to dip into that market then there could be something here with the 31-year-old.
However, the team’s form would have to remain quite disappointing before they start thinking about any possible moves in all likelihood - and then there's the issue of potentially having too many players in the squad as it stands for Eustace, as there's potential for at least one or two individuals to miss out on the 25-man squad as it stands.
