Irish billionaire Dermot Desmond, Celtic’s principal shareholder, was confronted by supporters while playing as an amateur, paired with a professional, during the third round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Saturday.
L'Équipe reports that, on the 15th green of the Old Course at St Andrews, the 76-year-old was targeted with tennis balls, some printed with his face and crossed out.
Supporters used the occasion to say the situation cannot continue, accusing Desmond of running Celtic while using his wealth to avoid scrutiny and responsibility.
The unrest has built for months, fuelled by poor European results, underwhelming transfer business and what fans regard as opaque governance.
After completing his round, Desmond, who with Bryant was 112th on -15 and missed the cut, was escorted from the course by security.
