Derrikson Quirós proposes after win, calls off engagement by Wednesday

In Guatemala, Costa Rican midfielder Derrikson Quirós proposed to influencer Wendy Nicole at the end of a match on Sunday, then by Wednesday the engagement was over.

After Xelajú’s 4-2 win over Marquense, the 24-year-old knelt to ask her to marry him. The player said in an Instagram post the following Wednesday that the wedding would not go ahead.

The message called it a difficult moment to be handled with maturity. It added a focus on his career, his team and his personal development, and thanked supporters while requesting privacy.

There were no further details from his former fiancée.

The abrupt turnaround drew wider attention than the celebratory scenes only days earlier.
