Didier Deschamps installed an anti-provocation blueprint that underpinned France’s 1-0 World Cup last-16 win over Paraguay, keeping tempers in check. The approach targeted discipline as late flashpoints threatened to spill over.

According to L'Équipe, the France manager spent the preceding days drilling specific behaviours to avoid retaliating to taunts or rough treatment. Scouting feedback shaped a plan that focused as much on composure as on tactics.

A youthful side, with four first-time World Cup starters Mike Maignan, Manu Koné, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola, held their nerve on American soil. Several players, including Kylian Mbappé, Jules Koundé, Koné and Maignan, faced insults and, in some cases, blows. Rayan Cherki later said the squad had been primed for Paraguay’s attempts to drag opponents out of their game.

In a session at Bentley days before the tie, staff whistled fewer fouls and forbade complaints, forcing players to play on through frustration. Deschamps reinforced, in group talks and one-to-ones, that no gesture should draw a response, a message senior figures echoed. Players were also reminded that mouthing insults could be punishable under the laws.

During the match, at intervals and at the final cooling break, Deschamps urged restraint and avoidance of insults or physical confrontations. He then tasked substitutes and staff with defusing the fractious finale, instructing them to ring-fence Mbappé. Jean-Philippe Mateta, Maxence Lacroix and Brice Samba, selected in part for their stature, were pushed to the front to manage any flashpoints.
