Didier Deschamps has spoken for the first time since his mother’s funeral. He said stepping away was necessary for him and France, and he has resumed duties in the United States as Les Bleus pursue a third star.

According to Le Progres, his last media appearance came on 22 June after the win over Iraq, a match halted for two hours because of storms. The following day his mother, Ginette, died, and Adrien Rabiot described the news as a shock, adding that grieving in camp is not easy.

Deschamps made a swift round trip to France for the service. He felt it was essential for his well-being and that of the team, with his staff finishing the job against Norway in his absence.

Back since Saturday in the United States, he has resumed his role and is focusing on the task in hand. Keeping busy, he suggested, helps him cope.

The squad sense he is affected but also determined to see the job through. This World Cup will bring an end to his 14-year tenure.

Rabiot said Deschamps has returned eager to go as far as possible, is smiling and enthusiastic, and shields the group from negativity, with the players united behind him.

Deschamps has been moved by messages of support in recent days. He said FIFA’s refusal to allow black armbands against Norway changed nothing for him, and France will now rally around a single objective.
