France advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia, but required a Kylian Mbappé penalty in the 70th minute to break down their disciplined opponents. Paraguay's defensive structure held firm for over an hour before substitute Désiré Doué drew the decisive foul that led to the spot-kick.

Despite controlling 76% possession and creating multiple chances, France struggled to convert from open play against a Paraguay side content to frustrate. Mbappé's seventh goal of the tournament drew him level with Lionel Messi at the top of the scoring charts as Les Bleus set up a quarterfinal clash with Morocco. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Paraguay v France.

Winners

Kylian Mbappé (France)

Kylian Mbappé delivered when France needed him most, stepping up to convert the 70th-minute penalty that sent his side into the World Cup quarterfinals. With goalkeeper Orlando Gill diving the wrong way, the captain struck low into the bottom-right corner to break the deadlock against Paraguay's stubborn defensive block.

The goal took Mbappé to seven for the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot race. Earlier in the match, he had missed a clear header from the edge of the small area in the 31st minute, failing to connect properly with a cross that had found him unmarked.

Late in the match, Mbappé forced Gill into two excellent saves in quick succession—first parrying a curling shot from outside the box, then denying his close-range rebound from near the six-yard area. Despite the missed chances, his composure from the penalty spot proved decisive as France advanced to face Morocco.

Désiré Doué (France)

Désiré Doué made an immediate impact after replacing Bradley Barcola in the 61st minute, providing the spark that France had desperately lacked. His direct dribbling and willingness to take on defenders created the breakthrough that finally unlocked Paraguay's resolute defensive structure.

The decisive moment came when Doué drove into the penalty area with superb close control, drawing multiple Paraguay defenders before Diego Gómez brought him down. The referee initially waved play on, but VAR intervention confirmed the foul, awarding France the penalty that would prove match-winning.

Doué completed both dribbles he attempted, tormenting tired Paraguayan legs with his directness and pace. His late shot from outside the box was blocked by the defensive wall as France sought to extend their lead, capping an influential cameo that demonstrated France's attacking depth from the bench.

Loser

Diego Gómez (Paraguay)

Diego Gómez's World Cup ended in disappointment after his foul on Désiré Doué inside the penalty area proved decisive in Paraguay's elimination. The contact with both of Doué's legs during the challenge was clear enough for the referee to award a penalty following VAR review.

Until that moment, Paraguay's defensive blueprint had frustrated the tournament favourites for 70 minutes, limiting France to distance shots despite their territorial dominance. Gómez had contributed to that effort, blocking Manu Koné's shot in the first half and having an effort of his own from a rebound that flew off target.

The midfielder was substituted immediately after Mbappé converted the resulting penalty, his tournament ending on the most painful note possible. Paraguay had defended resolutely and come within 20 minutes of forcing extra time against France, only for Gómez's ill-timed challenge to undo all their hard work.
