Grêmio have yet to finalise Matías Arezo’s departure, despite an agreement for the Uruguayan to remain with Peñarol in 2026. The club are working to settle the situation in the coming days.
According to Gremistas.net, the initial plan was a sale to raise immediate funds, but the most concrete scenario is another loan. Peñarol have offered to extend the deal until December 2026, with an option to buy at the end.
Grêmio would receive around $400,000, about R$ 2.2 million, with the option fixed at €3.5 million, roughly R$ 19.5 million. People on the player’s side say terms are agreed, with a final issue remaining between his representatives and Peñarol.
There have been suggestions in recent days that Arezo has asked for a pay rise, a figure said to be beyond Peñarol’s reach for now, which has delayed signatures. A rumoured move to Junior Barranquilla has not been confirmed, and the parties stress Arezo wants to stay at Peñarol, where he is popular and viewed as important by coach Diego Aguirre.
Arezo spent the second half of 2025 on loan at Peñarol, a move that also generated a small payment for Grêmio. The club have sold Alysson, loaned Cristian Olivera and are negotiating further exits.
