Chelsea have agreed a deal that will see Alejandro Garnacho join Aston Villa on loan with a conditional obligation to buy next summer, according to reports.

Earlier this month, new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso made a surprisingly honest comment about Garnacho’s situation at the club after just one season at the club.

“Well, the situation is that we have spoken with the sporting directors,” the Chelsea boss answered when asked about Garnacho.

“There is an interest for him from other clubs. So let's see how this develops.

“But hopefully, it finishes in the best possible way for other clubs.”

The development may have now reached its conclusion as Chelsea and Aston Villa have reached an agreement for a deal for Garnacho.

The 22-year-old is expected to join Villa on loan with a conditional obligation for a permanent transfer.

Chelsea are expected to recoup £43 million, including the loan fee, for the winger should the clause be met and the permanent deal go through.

The Athletic reports that Garnacho has also agreed a four-year deal with Villa in anticipation of the possible permanent move.

What are the conditions to trigger an obligation to buy in Chelsea and Villa’s deal for Garnacho?

According to The Athletic, the clause is based on a minimum number of appearances across the 2026/27 season.

It did not specify the number of appearances, but other reports, including from BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella, insisted that the clause “should be easily achieved”.

Chelsea had a similar deal with Bayern Munich for Nicolas Jackson last season, although the latter managed to avoid triggering the obligation-to-buy clause in the loan deal that results in the striker's return to Stamford Bridge this summer.

While it is by no means guaranteed that Garnacho would meet the minimum appearances, Morgan Rogers’ transfer to Chelsea should also leave some space for the winger at Villa Park.

Rogers is primarily a number 10, but often featured as a left winger under head coach Unai Emery last season, a role he may also play at Chelsea under Alonso in the upcoming season.

Garnacho, who joined Chelsea from Manchester United in a deal worth £40m in the summer of 2025, struggled to establish himself as a regular starter for the club last season.

He made 24 Premier League appearances for the club in that period, but only 14 of which were as a starter, in which he managed to bag just one goal and four assists.

Obviously, the lack of a full pre-season with Chelsea last summer did not help Garnacho’s case, in addition to the club’s managerial changes mid-season, but it is easy to see why they decided to cash in on the Argentina international after just one season.

Chelsea still have Rogers, Jamie Gittens, as well as the versatile Pedro Neto, as left-winger options, in addition to Jackson, who could also operate on the flank if needed and should he remain at the club.
