An insight into the financial stakes at play for Barcelona over the final weeks of the La Liga campaign has today been forthcoming online.

Barca, of course, saw their hopes of securing a 2nd-placed finish in Spain’s top-flight dealt a considerable blow this past weekend.

As much came as a trip to Catalan neighbours Girona saw the Blaugrana condemned to the wrong side of a 4-2 result, in the process slipping to 3rd in the table.

With Xavi’s troops having long been eliminated from the title race, though, just why is a runners-up finish so important come the season’s close?

First of all, a place in the next Spanish Super Cup, and the financial rewards attached, is on the line.

This, however, is not all.

As revealed by Marta Ramon on Esports RAC1 on Wednesday, the difference in television rights funds afforded to 2nd and 3rd is also significant.

For the former, an additional €7 million will be paid out by La Liga and its sponsors.

For a club whose monetary problems have so long been public knowledge, missing out on as much would, in turn, come as a hefty blow for the aforementioned Barcelona.
