Deyverson has denied taunting Palmeiras with a goalmouth gesture towards Carlos Miguel, saying in an Instagram post he would never disrespect the club.

LDU beat Palmeiras 3-2 in normal time, but the Brazilians advanced 4-2 on penalties in the Libertadores quarter-finals.

After converting LDU’s first kick, the 35-year-old looked at Carlos Miguel, waved his hands and pointed to the centre of the goal.

He said the action was aimed solely at the goalkeeper, explaining Carlos Miguel had indicated he expected a shot down the middle, so he mimicked that sign after scoring.

Deyverson added that he spoke to the keeper afterwards, saying such things happen on the pitch, and he congratulated Palmeiras on their progression.

An idol for Palmeiras supporters, Deyverson played 140 matches for the club and won the Brasileiro, the Libertadores, the Recopa Sudamericana and the Paulista.
