Holstein Kiel and SG Sonnenhof Großaspach are the latest clubs to book their places in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. The side from 2. Bundesliga eliminated the restructured TSV 1860 Munich, while Großaspach recorded their first-ever victory at this stage on penalties against Arminia Bielefeld.
Munich-born Tim Walter led his Holstein Kiel team to a 2-0 victory against 1860 Munich in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. After their relegation to Regionalliga due to financial reasons, the traditional club is now knocked out early from the cup.
Phil Harres put the 2. Bundesliga side in front ten minutes before the break with yet another powerful header. Guillermo Balzi, who scored Kiel’s first goal of the season in 2. Bundesliga, sealed the victory in injury-time when the goalkeeper of the hosts Vitus Eicher tried to score at the other end from a set-piece opportunity.
Meanwhile, the newly-promoted 3. Liga side became the first club to beat a team playing in a division above them. Großaspach took the lead with Elias Rahn’s first goal of the season in the 12th minute. However, they went into the half-time break with a deficit after Stefano Russo and Joel Gordowski scored twice in the space of two minutes.
Prolific striker Fabian Eisele forced extra-time with a penalty-kick strike to level the score once again. Bielefeld were under immense pressure early in the extra-time as Joel Felix saw his second booking just before the end of regular time.
Oliver Kirch’s side managed to take it into a penalty shootout after an uneventful final 15 minutes. Maximilian Reule was the hero of the penalty shootout by denying Maximilian Bauer and Tim Handwerker before Roberts Uldriķis’ poor attempt sealed the deal for the club that achieved back-to-back promotions to reach 3. Liga.
