According to AS, Aston Villa are braced for the likely summer exit of Damián ‘Dibu’ Martínez, with a significant Juventus offer on the table that appeals to the goalkeeper. Any departure would force Villa to line up a dependable replacement.
That scenario has reopened a Premier League route for Álex Remiro of Real Sociedad, with his name again prominent on shortlists alongside the Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki of Parma and James Trafford of Manchester City.
As reported last year, Villa had the Navarrese keeper among leading candidates for Villa Park if Martínez were to go. The Argentine stayed in England then, but 12 months on the picture is different and Unai Emery’s interest remains for next season.
Emery admires the Real Sociedad goalkeeper’s profile. Remiro has one year left on his contract, which expires in June 2027.
After seven seasons as first choice, and having missed the final World Cup squad, this summer could be pivotal for his career. It was not his best campaign, although he kept the league starts while Unai Marrero handled the Copa.
Asked recently about his future, he said he would not close any doors and that he knows where he is and what he wants. For now he plans to switch off on holiday and hopes Spain win the World Cup, speaking at Barcelona airport before flying out with his partner.
