Following France’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Spain in Tuesday’s World Cup semi-final, Bayern Munich star Michael Olise came under scrutiny for his performance. However, France head coach Didier Deschamps was quick to defend the 24-year-old, insisting the criticism was unfair.

Speaking after the match, Deschamps said:

“I think you’re being a bit harsh. He wasn’t at his best against Spain, just like some of the others. He’s still got plenty of room to improve. Of course he’ll get even better. The big occasion and the emotional side of it are also a factor. But if there’s one player who truly broke through at this World Cup, it’s him. And on top of that, he’s a genuinely great person. He will reach even greater heights. Sometimes things just don’t click, and you also have to give credit to the opponent. I’ll use Dayot Upamecano as an example. Now he’s an absolute monster, but it took him time to get there too.”

Despite the disappointment of France’s semi-final exit, Olise enjoyed an outstanding tournament, registering five assists while featuring in every match for Les Bleus. The Bayern winger was one of France’s standout performers throughout the competition and further enhanced his reputation on the international stage.
