France national team manager Didier Deschamps has defended Kylian Mbappe, addressing the long-running criticism surrounding the Real Madrid forward’s playing style.

Speaking at the Sports Journalism Festival (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Deschamps offered a clear explanation, stressing that Mbappe’s role on the pitch naturally demands a certain mindset.

Mbappe, who leads the line for both Real Madrid and the France national football team, has often been labelled as individualistic, especially when his goal numbers come under scrutiny.

Deschamps made it clear that such a judgment often ignores the reality of what is expected from a world-class striker.

Deschamps addressed how Mbappe is often perceived by the public and the media. He explained that the image surrounding the forward does not always reflect what happens inside the dressing room.

“We have the image of someone who is very selfish and individualistic,” he began.

The national team coach then expanded on that point by explaining why that so-called selfishness is not only normal but necessary.

“Of course, he’s a striker; it would be strange if he didn’t have a certain amount of selfishness.

“I can assure you that, in terms of how things work and everything else, he is someone who knows that, as captain, his word carries weight with the whole team.”

Deschamps went on to analyse Mbappe’s role within the French setup in more detail, pushing back against those who judge the forward purely on physical data.

The coach made it clear that not every player should be measured by the same standards.

“If you want to judge Kylian by saying he has to run at least 11 kilometres per game, don’t bother, he won’t do it.

“But, on the other hand, he has many other important and decisive qualities.”

Deschamps’ assistant Guy Stephan also added valuable insight, highlighting Mbappe’s explosive contribution during matches.

He pointed out that while Mbappe may not cover the most distance, his efforts are often more intense and decisive.

“He’ll make many more high-intensity runs than the others,” he said.
