Kylian Mbappé has reported for international duty with France carrying a minor ankle sprain, sustained during Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over Villarreal on Saturday, according to RMC Sport.
The 26-year-old forward was forced off shortly after scoring in the 81st minute at the Santiago Bernabéu, heading straight down the tunnel. France head coach Didier Deschamps offered an update on his captain’s condition as Les Bleus gathered at Clairefontaine on Monday to prepare for their 2026 World Cup qualifying fixtures — against Azerbaijan at the Parc des Princes on Friday and Iceland in Reykjavik next Monday.“I’ve spoken with him. He’s here — he has a little issue, but nothing that would stop him from coming,” Deschamps told reporters at the press conference. “We’ll take the time to assess things with the medical staff and then see how it evolves.”Deschamps added that all players would undergo the usual checks upon arrival, confirming no additional information had yet been passed on by Real Madrid.
Mbappé had featured prominently during the last international break, scoring in both victories over Ukraine (2-0) and Iceland (2-1) to overtake Thierry Henry and move into second place on France’s all-time scoring list with 52 goals. He is now just five goals behind record-holder Olivier Giroud (57) — a tally he could close in on if declared fit for selection.GFFN | George Boxall
