Didier Digard delays decision on Le Havre future as he assesses club resources

Didier Digard is out of contract at Le Havre and will delay a decision on his future, prioritising the Ligue 1 run-in and seeking clarity on the club’s resources. According to L'Équipe, the board want him to extend but he plans to decide only once he knows more about what is possible.

At full-time of Lens 1-0 Le Havre last Friday, Pierre Sage embraced Digard in a show of respect between the coaches. Lens are second and had to work to beat Le Havre twice this season, 2-1 and 1-0. Le Havre are 15th, the position they also claimed last season after a dramatic finish.

After reviving Nice as interim, Digard delivered a heroic survival in his first campaign as official number one. This term, after 20 matches, Le Havre are six points above the play-off place held by Nantes and seven clear of Auxerre.

His contract, agreed in 2024, runs for two years with a further year if European qualification is secured, which appears unlikely.

The winter window met many of his requests, bar a centre forward, and he would prefer a smaller squad. He also wants a clearer view of how far the team can be improved at a club that made no purchases across the last five windows and whose wage bill, one of Ligue 1’s smallest, is overseen by the DNCG.

Talks with Jean-Michel Roussier remain daily and smooth. Digard, 39, recognises what he owes to the sporting department and the president, who supported him last season even amid public criticism when the team were in the relegation places.

Having proved himself tactically, he is still in demand. French and overseas clubs, some chasing Europe, are interested, but for now his task is to secure a second straight survival.
