A childhood far from Abidjan

At a very young age, Didier Drogba left Ivory Coast for France. He was just five years old when he went to live with his uncle, Michel Goba, a former professional footballer. The family’s decision was rooted in its own history.

Drogba’s father had himself raised his brother Michel after their parents passed away. In gratitude, Michel later decided to welcome his nephew to France.

The future Elephants captain first landed in Brest while his uncle was playing in the French league. This was just the beginning of a journey that would take him through several regions.

Years of wandering from city to city

After Brittany, the family moved successively to Abbeville, Tourcoing, and then Vannes. These frequent moves became part of young Drogba’s everyday life.

As a teenager in Vannes in the early 1990s, he went through a tough period. His grades dropped at school, and he even had to repeat a year—something unusual for him.

The discomfort was real. The distance from his parents, who remained in Ivory Coast, weighed heavily on his young life.

Back then, communication was scarce. Phone calls to Abidjan were brief and often hard to make. The separation became a daily burden.

Football as a refuge

In this context, football quickly became his escape. On the pitch, Didier Drogba transformed completely. The quiet, reserved boy at home became a leader with the ball at his feet.

This was where he truly came alive. On the field, he directed his teammates, motivated the squad, and already showed the character that would later define his reputation.

Even his uncle was surprised by the contrast between the shy boy at home and the player who naturally took charge on the pitch.

The turning point came when his parents finally joined him in France. Drogba settled in the Paris region and began taking the first steps in his football development.

He ultimately chose Le Mans, where he took his first steps as a professional.
