FC Bayern reached the last 16 of the Champions League ahead of schedule with a 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise. Harry Kane was once again the match winner, providing an honest analysis after the game and highlighting the improved performance after the break
The German record champions struggled for a long time against courageous Belgians and a compact defence. The first half remained tough from Munich’s point of view, with clear chances in short supply. Kane had clear words for this: „We were a bit sloppy with the ball in the first half,“ he emphasised in an interview with DAZN. In addition, it was particularly difficult against the ball: „We didn’t have enough energy without the ball.“

After the break, Bayern were much more attacking, aggressive and determined. Kane made it clear that this was exactly the plan: „That’s why we wanted to show more intensity in the second half, and I think we did that.“ The Englishman himself led the way, scoring twice in the space of a few minutes. His initial conclusion was correspondingly satisfied: „I think the second half was better.“
In his view, the goals were also scored at the right time: „We scored at the right times.“ Patience was crucial, especially against an unpleasant opponent like Saint-Gilloise. FC Bayern ultimately kept a cool head and did not allow themselves to be rattled
The game was complicated once again by the yellow card against Minjae Kim. Kane showed understanding for this, but remained calm: „We were a bit unlucky with the red card.“ Nevertheless, the Munich side remained in control even when outnumbered. „But even after we were down to ten men, we controlled the game well and overall it’s a good three points,“ said the 32-year-old
The win was particularly important with a view to the rest of the season. Kane recalled the strain of pre-season: „Last year we didn’t make it this early and that made February a very busy schedule.“ He said that made the pride in the team all the greater: „That’s why I’m proud of the lads for the way we’ve handled qualification so far.“
Despite the missed penalty and the missed hat-trick, the goalscorer’s satisfaction prevailed. „It would have been nice, it would have been nice,“ said Kane, referring to the missed spot-kick, but immediately added: „But yeah, it’s one of those things. That’s why I train, that’s why I try to improve. It wasn’t to be today, but I’ll be ready for the next one.“
The focus is now on the final game of the league phase. Kane made it clear that Bayern remain ambitious: „We have one more game and we want to finish as high as possible.“ An ambition that fits in with FC Bayern’s current self-image – and a further signal that Munich still have big plans for this Champions League season.
