One of Tottenham Hotspur‘s stars has admitted that he did not think he could make it as a professional footballer.

Spurs recently caused a stir by sacking Ange Postecoglou despite him winning the Europa League and securing the club a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Thomas Frank has now been appointed as Spurs’ new boss and has been handed a three-year contract at the north London club.

That will mean a new manager for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to work with and win over.

The shot-stopper has come a long way and admits he did not believe he could make it as a professional footballer.

He thinks that he needed a little bit of luck and then had natural growth as he developed into a good goalkeeper, with a loan at lower league club Fontanafredda from Udinese earlier in his career helping.

“I don’t deny that when I signed for Fontanafredda I just wanted to have fun”, Vicario said via Tutto Mercato.

“I wanted to break away from kids’ football, I didn’t think I could become a professional.

“It was a natural growth, with that little bit of luck that is needed.”

Vicario, 28, was snapped up by Tottenham from Italian side Empoli in the summer of 2023 and penned a five-year contract.

The Italy international will hope he can remain the first choice goalkeeper at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under the Frank regime that has just taken charge.

He had a tough time in the Premier League this season where he conceded 37 goals in 24 games.

Spurs signed another goalkeeper in the shape of Antonin Kinsky in the winter transfer window and he will look to put pressure on Vicario.
