Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlán will be the new manager of the Uruguay national team.
La Celeste had a poor 2026 World Cup campaign that saw the end of Marcelo Bielsa's team in charge. Now, the head of the country's football association, Ignacio Alonso, has confirmed Forlán's role on an interim basis.
"If an agreement is reached with Diego Forlan in the next few hours, he will be the coach of the under-20 team and for the upcoming friendly matches," Alonso said about the 47-year-old.
"He is enthusiastic, even though there are still a few details to finalise."
It is likely that Forlán will oversee Uruguay's remaining games in 2026 as well as for the March international break with a decision then to be made over who would be the new permanent manager – giving Forlán a window in which to stake his claim for the role on a permanent basis.
During his time as a player, Forlán played 112 games for Uruguay scoring 36 goals, winning the 2011 Copa América with his country and winning the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup.
