Diego Gomez has signed a new five-year Brighton and Hove Albion contract, with an option for a further year, ahead of the new season.
The 23-year-old’s commitment would take him close to his 30th birthday if it runs in full.
Albion sporting director Mike Cave said the Paraguay international has been an important addition, has adapted to Premier League football seamlessly, and that the club are pleased to secure his long-term future. He added they believe Gomez will continue to develop this season and remain important in pursuing their goals.
Gomez looks set to start the season on the right of midfield, continuing an unlikely but effective partnership with converted right-back Mats Wieffer.
He spent much of this summer with Paraguay at his first World Cup.
He has represented his country at senior level on 20 occasions, and Paraguay are already assured of involvement as co-hosts at the centenary 2030 competition.
