In 2019 a young Mexican star by the name of Diego Lainez set foot in Sevilla to complete his signing for Real Betis.
Signed from Club América for €14m, there were high expectations for the dazzling 18-year-old right winger who boasted strong dribbling skills and line-breaking forward passes.
Three and a half years on, Lainez hasn’t been able to make himself comfortable in European football. Given plenty of opportunities in his 72 games for Betis, 24 of which he was in the starting lineup, the winger hasn’t produced a good volume of goals or even the same level of enchanting football he displayed in his home league.
Even a loan move to Portuguese side Braga hasn’t helped, as Lainez has still not managed to impress his manager and has only played 10 per cent of all possible minutes in the league so far, as per Transfermarkt.
Now Marca reports Betis have all but completed the sale of the still-young 22-year-old winger to Tigres UANL, marking a return to the Mexican league for Lainez.
With more playing time in a comfortable environment, the once wonderkid will hopefully be able to find his feet again.
