Diego Maradona death trial: nephrologist says he saw no blood tests in file | OneFootball

A nephrologist told the court that kidney and weight tracking should have signalled a decline in the days before Diego Maradona’s death.

The hearing continued on Tuesday in Argentina. According to L'Équipe, Hernan Trimarchi criticised Maradona’s home care and said he had chronic kidney disease. Seven healthcare workers are on trial for potential fatal negligence.

Trimarchi said daily medical checks, nursing, blood counts and vital signs were the minimum. He added he did not see any blood tests in the home-hospitalisation file. He said rises in blood pressure or weight should have prompted action.

Autopsy findings showed his kidneys weighed far more than they should and had various lesions, which Trimarchi linked to obesity, cocaine use and hypertension. Maradona also had glomerulosclerosis, damaging renal filters and causing oedema.

Trimarchi sits on the 22-member interdisciplinary medical commission created by Argentina’s judiciary in 2021. He is the third specialist across the past three hearings, since mid-April in San Isidro, to flag missed warnings. Pathologist Carlos Cassinelli had said the decline was progressive for at least 10 days and an alert could have been raised.

Expert reports state Maradona died at home on 25 November 2020, aged 60, from cardiorespiratory arrest with pulmonary oedema after several hours. The defendants face up to 25 years in prison but deny responsibility, citing their specialisms and segmented roles. The trial is expected to run until September.
