Diego Moreira is flourishing on the right for Strasbourg, his resurgence underlined by Sunday’s 4-1 win at Lille.
According to L'Équipe, the 21-year-old Belgian even attempted an acrobatic second-half volley and was player of the match in the 2-1 win over Metz on 18 January, despite feeling under the weather. He looks close to last season’s breakout level.
A summer thigh injury disrupted his start, and after only two friendlies he waited to regain a league start. Used on both flanks and in varying roles, his form was patchy.
In recent weeks he has settled on the right, a spot Liam Rosenior rarely used him in. He played right wing-back at Toulouse on 6 December, then was a winger in the 1-1 draw at Nice on 3 January with Abdoul Ouattara behind him.
Gary O’Neil kept that pairing for his first match, a 6-0 win at Avranches on the 10th. Moreira scored in Manche, then again against Metz, and the return of right-back Guéla Doué has helped. He says he and Doué can swap, playing higher suits him, and a more attacking brief could bring more goals.
Now operating more inside on his left foot, he leaves the flank to Doué and looks for curled passes or shots, as shown by his assist for Martial Godo. He has attempted 10 shots in his past three matches, the same as in the previous 13, and delivered only five crosses in three, down from 21 in the three before.
