Diego Rolan, 33, has offered to help Girondins de Bordeaux, who are set to restart in Régional 1, the sixth tier of French football, after exclusion from national competitions and with judicial liquidation looming. The player said in a post, written in French, that his sole priority is the club’s interests and future.

The Uruguayan forward made 149 appearances and scored 38 goals for Bordeaux between 2013 and his departure in 2018. He was recruited from Uruguay in January 2013.

Popular with supporters from his time in Gironde, he has often signalled his affection for the club. He is coming off a spell with a small local side.

In his message, he portrayed Bordeaux as more than a football club, stressing its history, identity and heritage, and its place as an institution for the city and its fans.

He sees the route back resting on a serious, solid project built for the long term. His stated wish is for the club to regain its place in France’s top division.

If the chance arises, he is willing to contribute to the rebuild at his level, promising respect, determination and passion.
