Vasco da Gama’s defeat in Wednesday 21’s clássico sparked anger among the coaching staff and club greats. Former midfielder Diego Souza used Instagram to attack the refereeing, and said in a post that Cauan Barros’s sending off was cowardly and an act of trickery.
He acknowledged he was being openly partisan in the message, and argued the Vasco youngster had no intention of seriously catching his opponent.
Souza maintained the leg never came down to stamp the calf, adding that a yellow for an off-the-ball foul would have been acceptable. In his view, a red in such a situation favoured a team that does not need help. He ended the message with an insult aimed at those involved.
Now retired, Diego Souza has never hidden his affection for Vasco. His standout spell came in 2011 and 2012, when he was central to winning the Copa do Brasil, described as an unprecedented title that cemented his status among the club’s idols.
Renowned for physical strength and refined technique, the former playmaker forged a strong bond with the supporters. He remains a respected voice in defence of the institution.
