Diego Souza named Joinville head coach, cites Filipe Luís as inspiration | OneFootball

Diego Souza has been appointed Joinville head coach in Santa Catarina this week, and he says Filipe Luís is his reference point.

"We have many young coaches looking for opportunities, but none has stood out as much yet. I will be quick, Filipe Luís is the benchmark," he told Fshow on Disney Plus.

"He is very hard working and extremely intelligent. I have known Filipe for a long time, we were together in the youth national teams."

"Many top coaches have been at Flamengo and could not make the team perform, but he did. He won the Libertadores and the Brasileiro and delivered immediate results with a very qualified squad."

Despite past provocation of Flamengo while at Sport Recife, Diego Souza played for the club in 2005 and 2006. He made 37 appearances, scored seven goals and recorded one assist, and was part of the 2006 Copa do Brasil triumph.

At Flamengo, Filipe Luís also lifted the Copa do Brasil, two Carioca titles and a Supercopa.

Dismissed in March this year, Filipe Luís is now at Monaco in France. The club have played four friendlies, with two wins, one draw and one defeat, and face Liverpool on Sunday in another pre-season test.

Joinville exited Série D early, so Diego Souza’s first assignment will be the Copa Santa Catarina. The opener is on 30 August, with the final set for 29 November.
