Kicker reports that 61-year-old Dieter Hecking is set for a second spell at Wolfsburg as the club battle to avoid relegation.

Wolfsburg parted company with head coach Daniel Bauer earlier this morning after a run of eight matches without a win. They are 17th in the table, three points behind FC St. Pauli in 15th.

Hecking’s previous tenure ended in 2016 and included a DFB-Pokal triumph. He would be tasked with steering the side away from danger and preventing what would be the club’s first Bundesliga relegation.

He was most recently in charge of VfL Bochum in the second division, leaving earlier this season after just one win in the opening five matches.

If appointed in time, his first game could be away at TSG Hoffenheim, a testing start to Wolfsburg’s survival push.
