Dietmar Hamann says Phil Foden can rediscover his spark at Manchester City under Enzo Maresca after a very draining spell with Pep Guardiola. According to Goal.com, the 26-year-old now has a clean slate and a big chance.

Since debuting in November 2017, Foden has made 372 City appearances, scored 110 goals and won 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

He hit 27 goals in 2023-24 but has dipped slightly in recent seasons, missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s 2026 World Cup squad. This summer brought a new contract and a prominent role under Maresca, who previously worked alongside Guardiola at the Etihad.

“I think for him it’s probably the biggest chance,” Hamann said, noting periods when Guardiola “fell out of love” with players. “As good as Pep is, it can be very draining playing for him.” He added that it is a chance for Maresca to get Foden onside and for the player to step up.

“He looks very, very good,” said Maresca, who highlighted a sharper mood and training level than in the last one or two years. He added that, with departures over the summer, Foden may need to take a step forward in personality and leadership, and he is pleased with the way the midfielder is working.
