Dimitri Payet has announced his retirement at 38, confirming the decision on Ligue 1+ during half-time of Marseille against Lille, two of his former clubs.

According to GetFootballNewsFrance.com, the former France international was visibly emotional as he addressed supporters at the end of a 20-year career.

He said his journey had been beautiful and thanked his coaches, team-mates and everyone who had worked with him.

Payet made 492 Ligue 1 appearances for four clubs, Nantes, Lille, Saint-Etienne and Marseille, returning to the latter after a standout spell at West Ham United.

He featured 38 times for France. He had been a free agent following the termination of his Vasco de Gama contract.
