Stole Dimitrievski will not go to the World Cup after North Macedonia lost their play-off semi-final to Denmark, ending the Valencia goalkeeper’s hopes. It leaves, in principle, only Valencia’s Swiss contingent in contention for next summer’s tournament.
North Macedonia were beaten 4-0, all four arriving after the break, with Dimitrievski completing the 90 minutes. According to AS, he had set his sights on the event in the United States, Mexico and Canada this summer, but now turns to finishing the club season as strongly as possible.
This international window involved only two first-teamers on duty, Dimitrievski and Eray Cömert. Filip Ugrinic was also called by Switzerland, but a knee injury kept him at home.
With North Macedonia out, Valencia would, pending Ugrinic, have only one representative at the World Cup, Cömert, whose contract expires in June and whose renewal is uncertain.
Recent international breaks once left Valencia shorn of numerous players, but this time only three were involved and one stayed back injured.
Guido Rodríguez is another who could make the tournament, although he missed Lionel Scaloni’s latest Argentina squad, which makes it difficult. As things stand, the club could be represented by one or two players, and intriguingly both are Swiss, Cömert and Ugrinic.
