According to Globo.com, Diniz returns to the Carioca after two years.

Earlier in 2023, Diniz won the Taça Guanabara against Flamengo, his first major honour with a big club. In the Carioca finals that year, Fluminense lost the first leg 2-0 then overturned it 4-1, inspired by Cano, Marcelo and Arias.

He also won the Libertadores later that year, delivering Fluminense’s first title in the competition.

Since then, Flamengo have lifted the Carioca in 2024 and 2025.

Vasco’s most recent Carioca came in 2016, beating Botafogo in the finals to retain the crown after 2015 against the same opponents. Excluding Taça Guanabara and Taça Rio, their last major silverware was that 2016 title, lifted on 8 May. The current wait surpassed last year the club’s previous longest barren spell, from 1936 to 1945.

In 2024 Diniz reached the semi-finals, losing to Flamengo, then coached by Tite.
