Born in Setúbal in 1959, he played for Vitória de Setúbal, Vitória de Guimarães, Desportivo das Aves, Benfica, Porto and Salgueiros, winning eight trophies and earning 23 caps for Portugal.

He rose from Vitória de Setúbal to Vitória de Guimarães, then joined Benfica, where after a loan to Desportivo das Aves and a season behind Manuel Bento he won four league titles, the Taça de Portugal and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.

He started in Benfica’s last two European Cup finals, losing to PSV Eindhoven on penalties in 1987/88, then to Milan in 1989/90 as captain.

He later returned to Vitória de Setúbal, lifted two league titles with Porto, and finished his playing days at Salgueiros in 1997/98, which also marked his farewell to Portugal.

As a goalkeeping coach, he worked alongside José Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United, finishing at Al Hilal Omdurman in 2021, and tutored Vítor Baía, Petr Cech, Thibaut Courtois, Júlio César, Iker Casillas and David de Gea.
