Yan Diomande is growing impatient with a bit-part start to life at Real Madrid after arriving as the club’s record signing. With Rayo Vallecano visiting on Saturday, the 19-year-old winger is still waiting for a first start.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, José Mourinho has urged patience and noted Diomande was the last to arrive, yet the player is eager for a chance and struggles to understand a secondary role. He did not expect to walk into the XI, but the scarcity of minutes in the opening month has surprised him.
Diomande has logged 99 minutes across five substitute outings. He played 27 minutes against Espanyol, 7 versus Real Sociedad, 27 against Málaga, 26 in the defeat at Betis in Seville, and 12 against Inter in the Champions League. He has neither scored nor assisted.
He currently sits behind Mbappé, Vinícius, Brahim, Arda and Bernardo in the pecking order. Mourinho believes the winger needs an adaptation period, and selections on the right have tended to favour Arda and Brahim, the role Diomande covets.
Inside the club, the message is to be patient and to defer to the coach, conscious of last season’s Mastantuono case that ended with a loan to Fiorentina. If he does not start on Saturday, the situation could become uncomfortable for a €140 million signing, €125 million fixed plus €15 million in add-ons. Mourinho now decides whether to hand him a first start or keep him on the bench.
