Liverpool’s long pursuit of Yan Diomande appears over, with the winger having set his heart on Paris Saint-Germain.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have responded by switching their attention to PSG’s own Bradley Barcola, in a move that could reshape both clubs’ summers.
Diomande had been Liverpool’s top target for months. They saw a package worth €90m plus €10m in add-ons rejected by RB Leipzig and were ready to return with an improved bid. The player, though, told them his mind was made up.
His reasons for choosing Paris are varied. Romano says Diomande’s father has always supported PSG, and the teenager is drawn by the city, the project and the chance to compete for the Champions League. The presence of Luis Enrique, whom he regards as a tactical great, proved especially persuasive.
An agreement is already in place on personal terms. PSG have verbally agreed a five-year contract with Diomande, including a substantial salary. The focus now shifts to negotiations with Leipzig, who want a fee well beyond €100m.
That leaves Liverpool needing a new plan, and Barcola has emerged as the answer. The France international has slipped behind Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue in PSG’s pecking order, and Diomande’s arrival would push him further down still.
There is a neat symmetry to it all. Should PSG land Diomande, Barcola could be freed to leave, handing Liverpool their man. Romano confirms the Reds admire him, though Arsenal are also keen.
Liverpool’s need is pressing regardless. Mohamed Salah has left, while Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa have not convinced Andoni Iraola. Victor Munoz has arrived, but another winger remains a priority.
Barcola underlined his quality at the World Cup, scoring in France’s opening win over Senegal before their last-32 tie with Sweden.
