Jamie Carragher has questioned the ambition of Martin Zubimendi after the midfielder rejected Liverpool to remain at Real Sociedad.

Liverpool made Zubimendi their number one target for the summer in a bid to fix their holding midfield issues. The Spaniard opted to stay in the Basque Country with his boyhood club and is set to agree a new deal with the La Liga side.

The Reds are yet to make a signing this summer with the transfer window slamming shut next Friday.

Carragher has now brought up the ambition of Liverpool's primary target after recently being a part of Spain's European Championship winning squad.

The Anfield side look unlikely to be bringing any new signings in before August 30, with the only potential deal being with Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who would stay at the Spanish club until 2025.

"To be honest, he’s 25 years old, just won the European Championship and plays for Real Sociedad, I know it’s his hometown club but I think it’s time to get into the Premier League.

"It’s disappointing he won’t come to the Premier League, the best league in the world, and play in the Champions League with a historic club. Real Sociedad can’t be your last step," said Carragher on Sky Sports.

Bajcetic departure could make situation worse

Liverpool's 'number six' issues could take another turn for the worse if starlet Stefan Bajcetic leaves the club before the end of the window.

The 19 year-old is understood to be another player who is 'likely' to depart Anfield this summer, but whether that is on loan or permanently remains to be seen.

Liverpool have already offloaded multiple youngsters which has caused unrest amongst many fans.

Bobby Clark, Sepp van den Berg, Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Blair have all left the club on permanent transfers already and it doesn't seem that the list of talented youngsters bidding farewell to Anfield will stop there.
