It would have to be said the relationship between Rangers and its supporters has never been worse. From discord over the ownership, to hatred of Russell Martin, to the doubts about the quality of the signings. There’s no end to the toxicity between fan and club. Rangers fan disconnect is significant.
One only has to look at Djeidi Gassama. He specifically requested his birthday not be broadcast by the club on social media for fear of abuse in the comments.
Every single post the club makes now is greeted with derision and scathing retorts, and Gassama didn’t want his day ruined by that.
To add further fuel to the fire, the disconnect between the two extends to pyro. Rangers fans now threatened, by UEFA, amid a suspended sentence, with a European ban.
The club was fined almost £20K for a pyro in Belgium, a toxic match which saw the first public rebuke by supporters of Russell Martin amid the 6-0 slaughtering on the night.
All-in-all the toxicity between supporters and the club is an all-time high right now. There’s no loss of irony that fans got rid of the manager they didn’t want (Clement) and the board they didn’t want (Park).
This weekend sees Rangers host Hearts. Despite the Gorgie side’s historically poor record v Rangers especially in Govan who would bet against them taking all three points?
That will only further fuel the acrimony, and the absence of Nico Raskin from the starting XI would add further propane to the mix.
It’s a horrendous time in Rangers’ recent history. The most hopeless, poor, directionless and downright miserable period we can ever remember.
And the fact that players are now keeping their birthdays quiet shows just how low morale really is.
When you can’t even blow your candles out in peace, you know something is badly wrong.
The truth is nothing about the current environment feels sustainable, and every week piles more strain on the foundations. Rangers fan disconnect continues.
Supporters feel ignored, the board feels besieged, and the players look like they are shrinking under the weight. It’s not just results that are hurting, it’s the very identity of the club that is under siege. Unless something gives soon this disconnect could leave wounds that take years to heal.
