Belgium found themselves a goal down after nine minutes of play in Astana through Kairat Almaty’s teenage striker Denis Satpaev.

Despite having more than three quarters of the ball, they remained behind until the 48th minute when Club Brugge’s attacking midfielder Hans Vanaken levelled the score.

Belgium attacked throughout the remainder of the match but, even with the hosts going down to 10 men in the 79th minute, Kazakhstan managed to hold firm.

It means Belgium have 15 points from their seven matches in Group J of the European qualification process, sitting two points ahead of North Macedonia in second.

Only the winner of the group progresses directly to next summer’s tournament in USA, Canada and Mexico, so Belgium can seal their place at the tournament with victory over Liechtenstein on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, it was a super Saturday for City’s contingent in England’s squad at the U17 World Cup in Qatar.

Reigan Heskey scored the second for England as they beat South Korea 2-0 to progress to the Round of 16 of the tournament.

Heskey is England’s leading scorer so far with four goals.
