Dominic Calvert-Lewin took a playful swipe at the Premier League after a header he thought was his in Leeds United’s 4-1 win over Newcastle was reassigned.

The striker believed he had doubled the lead, only for the goals adjudication panel to rule the effort had deflected off a defender and award it to Jayden Bogle. “I didn’t know anything about it. Nothing about it!” he told Sky Sports.

Calvert-Lewin did get on the scoresheet on the stroke of half-time, steering past Lukas Hornicek to make it 3-0, and he and Bogle spoke to referee Michael Salisbury after the break. “I said to the ref that I didn’t really fancy telling him, especially at half-time. “But he’s happy with the points. He’s raging with the goal but happy with the points.”

The 29-year-old said in a post: “He just told me it didn’t touch him, how do I appeal this scandalous decision?? @premierleague.”

He later said he first learned at half-time that the second goal had been given to Bogle, admitted he had not realised his team-mate was involved, and accepted he would have to settle for the assist.

Monday’s victory lifted Leeds to third in the Premier League, four points off Arsenal and Manchester City. Last season’s top two are unbeaten so far. They host Crystal Palace on Sunday before an extended international break, then visit the champions, Mikel Arteta’s side, at the Emirates Stadium at 12.30pm on 10 October.
