Dominik Szoboszlai Shuts Down Curtis Jones Rift Talk After Liverpool Friendly

Pre-season always produces noise. A clip goes online, body language gets analysed, people start filling in the blanks. That is what happened after Liverpool’s win over Wrexham, when footage appeared to show Curtis Jones confronting Dominik Szoboszlai, with Kostas Tsimikas also dragged into the discussion over the captain’s armband.

The reaction was predictable. Social media did what it does, overreached, and turned a brief on-pitch exchange into a supposed dressing room issue. With Jones already being linked with a move away and his contract entering its final year, the speculation gained traction quickly. The problem was simple, there was very little substance to it.

Szoboszlai addresses Liverpool rumours

Szoboszlai has now dealt with it directly and, in truth, there is not much ambiguity left. The Liverpool midfielder said: “It was never a debate between us three. We just discussed something on the pitch. Actually, you guys [the media] make it very big, but next time we will manage to do it in the changing room.

“No, nobody was angry at no-one. It’s all cleared. We are cool, everybody.”

That is clear enough. No coded message, no hedging, no manufactured drama. A discussion happened during a game, emotions were involved, and then it ended. This is football, not a diplomatic summit.

Curtis Jones speculation lacked evidence

The Jones angle made the story more convenient for rumour merchants. A local player, questions over his future, an armband incident, and suddenly people were talking about a summer exit as though one clip had confirmed everything. It did not. Players argue. Captains get changed. Teammates react. None of that automatically points to a split.

There was also a useful follow-up, even if common sense should have been enough from the start. In training afterwards, Szoboszlai, Jones and Tsimikas were seen enjoying themselves during a keepy-uppy drill. Then, against Leeds, the Hungarian passed the captain’s armband to Jones. If there had been genuine friction, that would have been a strange way of showing it.

Liverpool do not need soap opera nonsense around the squad as Andoni Iraola prepares for his first campaign at Anfield. After the collapse of 2025/26 and the mess that followed, the focus has to be on rebuilding standards, restoring authority and getting key players aligned quickly.

That is why this matters, even if the incident itself was minor. Small stories can grow legs in a tense environment. Szoboszlai has now cut this one off. Good. Liverpool have bigger issues to solve than a fleeting disagreement in a pre-season friendly.

For anyone still determined to treat this as evidence of a wider fracture, there is not much left to hold on to. The players have moved on. So should everyone else.
