With both teams fighting relegation, the rulebook would say that there shouldn’t be any room for mistakes. However, that was the case in a cagey first-half with both teams scoring from penalty-kicks.
After Daniel Heuer Fernandes denied Wolfsburg’s January signing Jan Bürger, Daniel Elfadil was forced to make a foul so that Yannick Gerhardt wouldn’t reach first for the rebound. The fifth yellow card sees the center-back missing next week’s game against Köln.
And, the hosts took the lead from the resulting penalty through the experienced Christian Eriksen. At the other end, Luka Vušković converted a penalty he won as the teams entered the dressing room tied at 1-1.
Just before the hour mark, the next penalty-kick decision gave the chance for HSV to take the lead for the first time in the game. It was a foul on Vušković once again, but Jean-Luc Dompé took the responsibility this time around with the Croat fortunate to score with a weak effort in the first-half.
After an off-the-pitch incident saw him handed the record fine by the club, Dompé scored a vital goal in Hamburg’s fight for survival. The visitors held on to the score to return to winning ways following successive home defeats. Wolfsburg remain in 17th place as questions will continue to be asked over Daniel Bauer's time at the club.
The two teams will continue their fight to avoid the drop on matchday 26. Wolfsburg will travel to Champions League hopefuls Hoffenheim, while HSV face another six-pointer against Köln.
