Don Goodman has claimed Leeds United should join the race to sign Peterborough United’s Harrison Burrows amid interest from Sheffield United and Preston North End.

The full-back has attracted a lot of interest this summer following a standout campaign in League One last year.

It has been reported that Preston North End have had a bid rejected for the 22-year-old, with Sheffield United also believed to be keen on his signature.

Burrows contributed six goals and 14 assists as the Posh finished fourth in the table last season, featuring in 45 of their 46 regular league games (all stats from Fbref).

Daniel Farke will be keen to strengthen his defensive options this summer, with the Whites targeting a top two finish in the table in 2025.

Goodman believes that now is the time for Leeds to cash in on Junior Firpo due to his contract being set to expire next year.

He has highlighted Burrows as an example of a cheaper alternative that the club could pursue to replace him in the squad for next season.

“He cost a lot of money and so for me it would make sense to pull some money in if you can,” said Goodman, via MOT Leeds News.

“I’m sure Leeds United have irons in the fire in every single position.

“You only have to look at Ipswich Town nicking Leif Davis from them – there are nuggets out there, bits of quality. For example, there’s Peterborough left-back Harrison Burrows, plus others in League One that you can cherry-pick.

“There’s the possibility of a loan signing from the Premier League also in the left-back position.

“So while he had a very good season last time out, there are alternatives out there for Junior Firpo.

“He’d potentially be a player that if you can bring money in and replace for less wages and outlay in terms of a transfer fee, then it’s a real possibility.

“I always think it’s preferable when a player is in the final year, or even final two years of their contracts, that they are tied down for longer to retain their value or sold.

“With respect to Junior Firpo, he wouldn’t be one you consider a key player for Leeds United’s success going forward.”

Junior Firpo’s importance to Leeds

Firpo arrived at Leeds in the summer of 2021 from Barcelona, but has not been able to hit the heights expected of him.

The defender has made 69 league appearances across three campaigns at Elland Road, including 52 starts.

He started just 19 of his 26 appearances in the Championship last year, although he contributed seven assists in that time.

It was reported that Leeds paid £12.8 million to sign Firpo three years ago, but it remains to be seen what kind of fee the Yorkshire outfit could receive from a sale this summer.

Burrows for Firpo would be smart business by Leeds

Firpo hasn’t been able to perform at the level expected of him since arriving, and now would be a good time to cash in on him as losing him for nothing in 2025 would be a waste.

Burrows is an exciting talent that is ready to make the step up to the Championship after his excellent last 12 months.

He would be a smart upgrade on Firpo, and give Farke an exciting, creative option from the left flank, which the team really needs.

Competition from Preston and Sheffield United complicates the matter, but this is a move that Leeds should be monitoring at the very least.
