Donald Trump publicly backed Gianni Infantino on Monday night amid the furore over FIFA’s shelved reforms. The FIFA president is standing for re-election in March 2027.
After a period of White House silence, the US president said in a post on Truth Social that replacing Infantino would be a terrible mistake.
He praised the Italo-Swiss president, crediting him with overseeing the most successful World Cup, and warning that if he left the tournament would not match that level of success or profitability.
Infantino has been mired in crisis since the disclosure of a contested plan to open FIFA to private investors, a project later abandoned after heavy criticism. It included an aborted proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup.
Seeking his exit, UEFA, Concacaf and the AFC issued a joint open letter on Monday to rally the wider football family. The game remains deeply split over how the crisis should be resolved.
