Manchester United have prevailed in the battle for the services of Southampton teenager Harley Emsden-James.
As reported in recent days, the Red Devils have been leading the race for the 16-year-old who is considered one of the hottest prospects in his age group.
Man Utd insider, Sully, has now described the operation as a ‘done deal’, suggesting that the signatures are now imminent.
The source reveals that the Old Trafford outfit managed to beat off competition from several other suitors, including Chelsea, Aston Villa and Arsenal, to secure the youngster’s services.
Due to his tender age, the player isn’t tied to a professional contract, but the Saints are set to receive an ‘academy compensation’ of £1 million.
Emsden-James has already featured for Southampton’s U18 side, so he’s now expected to join Manchester United U18, even though he won’t turn 17 until next March. The fact that the teenager has been burning the stages suggests he could be a real gem.
The English talent won’t be the only youngster to join Man Utd’s ranks this summer. Young full-back Diego Leon is also on his way to Carrington. The Reds have already booked the Paraguayan’s services in January.
Moreover, 18-year-old French striker Enzo Kana-Biyik will also join on a free transfer from Le Havre.
These acquisitions confirm INEOS’ plan to solidify the club’s youth ranks, to nurture the first team with homegrown talent instead of spending vast amounts on ready-made stars, a strategy that hasn’t panned out too well for the club in recent years.
For his part, Ruben Amorim has shown his willingness to offer opportunities for some of the most exciting young prospects at the club. He has already granted several players their senior debuts, including Harry Amass, Chido Obi-Martin and Ayden Heaven.
