Donyell Malen has become Aston Villa’s first outgoing of the summer after completing a £22m switch to Roma on a four-year deal, the Italian club confirmed on Tuesday.

Malen scored 15 goals in 20 appearances for Roma after joining on loan in January. The agreement included an obligation to buy if they qualified for next season’s Champions League, which was secured with a 2-0 win over Verona last weekend when he opened the scoring.

He had arrived at Villa from Borussia Dortmund almost a year earlier. For Unai Emery’s side he managed 10 goals in 46 outings, with only 14 starts.

Another Villa loanee, Enzo Barrenechea, is expected to complete a £13m permanent move to Benfica in the coming days. The Argentine joined from Juventus when Douglas Luiz went the other way for £42.5m two summers ago.

Barrenechea did not make a first-team appearance for Villa, spending both seasons out on loan, the first with Valencia. Luiz is back at Villa on loan from Juventus after arriving in January, and Emery must decide whether to trigger a £23m option to buy. He made more than 200 appearances during his first spell at the club.
