Since then, it's pretty much been unprecedented for an Everton player to move to Liverpool or vice versa. The club's simply do not do any business with each other.
But this could change this summer, with the door opening for a potentially crazy swap deal between the two sides.
According to The Times, Everton are admirers of Ben Doak and are considering a move for him this summer.
The young Liverpool attacker has been impressive in the Championship during his loan spell. But it's unclear whether he has a long-term future at the club.
With new additions in attack and Mohamed Salah to compete against on the right-wing, Doak's future may lie away from Anfield.
The Reds would of course be reluctant to sell him to Everton. However, Hughes might be more willing to do a deal if Liverpool could get something in return.
That player could be Jarrad Branthwaite. Liverpool are long-term admirers and as we have mentioned above they are looking to bring in a centre-back this summer.
Branthwaite could be the perfect option. He's homegrown, and he's a very good defender. Liverpool have been linked as one of his admirers as recently as a few days ago.
The Everton defender is still relatively young at just 22-years-old. He ranks among the top five centre-backs for aerial duels won in the Premier League this season (64%).
He's hard to beat, winning 72.32% of his defensive duels in total, which is not far away from Van Dijk's numbers at 73.76%.
And he's comfortable on the ball averaging 8.06 progressive passes per 90, again not far away from Van Dijk's 8.32 progressive passes per 90.
It would be a completely crazy move. But if the two sides are to break an over 20-year-long tradition, the only way it would make sense is if both bring in one player from the other.
This way, Everton get one of Liverpool's promising young stars and vice versa.
