Dorival Júnior hails Hugo Souza and Memphis in Corinthians win over Grêmio

On the afternoon of this Sunday, the 2nd, Corinthians returned to the field for the Brazilian Championship. In a match held at Neo Química Arena and valid for the 31st round of the national competition, Timão hosted Grêmio, aiming to maintain their recent good form. And they succeeded, winning in Itaquera by 2-0, in front of 42,000 fans – the goals were scored by Gustavo Henrique and Memphis.

After the match, coach Dorival Júnior addressed the press in a press conference, where he praised the performance of the number 10 player: “Memphis has a very interesting way of interpreting the game that starts with marking. He is a guy who closes many spaces, even if it's not aggressive combat. He attacks at the right moment, which complicates the opponent's exits. Without the ball, he performs a very interesting function. This perception is very much his own. He delivers very positive things to us over the 90 minutes. With or without the ball.”

Dorival pointed out more tactical aspects of Memphis. “He plays a lot with proximity. It's a detail we need to improve. We need to use him more as a pivot so we can have proximity up top. Even if he's marked, he likes to receive. If this possibility presents itself, we need to try to understand and, during the 90 minutes, use it a bit more, which is a very positive aspect of the athlete”, he explained.

Another athlete mentioned in the conference was goalkeeper Hugo Souza, about whom the coach highlighted the effort to play even with pain. “There is no player who doesn't play with pain. It comes down to the athlete's resilience and overcoming, and Hugo has a lot of that. Wanting to play and showing that you want to be present, regardless of the difficulty, is highly positive. Honestly, I still doubted he could be on the field. He had a very rapid evolution, felt confident to be on the field. We couldn't go against the athlete”, he stated.
