Borussia Dortmund are ‘close to extending’ Brandt’s contract, according to Ruhr Nachrichten on 3 March, while it has already been confirmed that Niklas Süle will leave in the summer.

Brandt, 29, has 10 goals and 4 assists in 31 matches this season. In February he said he was taking his time and did not want the matter to drag into June or July, calling it a fundamental decision that needed thought.

“Let's not kid ourselves, especially last year, things have been a bit bumpy. I think he's made it his mission to really enjoy playing football again and not end his career like this.” Volker Struth said, speaking to Bild's Phrasenmäher podcast.

“Niki has long had a reputation for not being the most exemplary professional. For me, he is still the best German center-back in terms of this aspect.”

Süle joined from Bayern Munich on a free in summer 2022 and has struggled with injuries to replicate past levels. This season he has started seven competitive matches.

Besides injured captain Emre Can, who recently suffered a cruciate ligament tear, Brandt is the second player with an expiring deal expected to be extended.
